THE AGE-OLD ACNE DILEMMA

Teenage Acne: Blame it on Hormones

Ah, the teenage years. Hormones are in overdrive, and your skin is often the first to show it. Androgens, those pesky hormones, stimulate the oil glands in your skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. It’s no wonder acne is a rite of passage for many teenagers. Whilst topical treatment can make a massive difference, sometimes it’s the hormones that need to be looked into or the gut.

Adult Acne: Stress, Hormones, and Lifestyle

Fast forward a few years, and you might think you’re out of the woods. But alas, adult acne can creep up on you, often due to stress, fluctuating hormones, or lifestyle factors. Whether it’s that high-stress job or changes in your hormonal cycle, adult acne is a frustrating reality for many.

HOLISTIC ACNE SOLUTIONS: MORE THAN SKIN DEEP

1. Nourish Your Body from Within

Food for acne

You are what you eat, and your skin reflects your diet. Load up on fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like flaxseeds and salmon, can reduce inflammation. Probiotics, such as those in yogurt and kefir, support a healthy gut, which is linked to clearer skin. Our gut can be linked to a tonne of issues we see played out on our skin. Getting that under control is the first step to your best skin. Diet is perhaps the hardest element to tackle, but is by far the most beneficial and impactful.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Water is your skin’s best friend. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and keeps your skin hydrated. Aim for at least 8 glasses a day – your skin will thank you!

3. Stress Less, Glow More

Easier said than done, we know. But stress management is crucial. Practice mindfulness, gentle stretching, Pilates, or deep-breathing exercises. A calm mind often leads to calmer skin. Check out our self-care challenge series on the blog for weekly tips to help you take care of your mental wellbeing.

PREVENTION TIPS: KEEP ACNE AT BAY

acne treatment

1. Keep Your Hands Off

Avoid touching your face. Your hands can transfer oils and bacteria to your skin, leading to breakouts.

2. Cleanse Regularly

Use a gentle, natural cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. Cleansing twice a day is usually sufficient.

3. Exfoliate Wisely

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells that can clog pores, but over-exfoliation can irritate your skin. Stick to gentle exfoliation once or twice a week.

4. Moisturise Daily

Even oily skin needs moisture. Choose a non-comedogenic moisturiser that won’t clog your pores.
