The Dilemma of Dry Skin:Causes, Effects and How to Fix It

Dry skin

Dry skin is a common skin problem that many people face, regardless of their age, gender, or skin type. It can lead to flaky, rough, itchy, and tight skin. If not addressed, dry skin can become more uncomfortable and even lead to cracking and inflammation. Let’s dive into what causes dry skin and how to deal with it to keep your skin healthy and happy.

WHAT CAUSES DRY SKIN?

There are several reasons why your skin might be feeling dry:

  1. Environmental Factors: Dry, cold air and low humidity can suck the moisture right out of your skin.

  2. Ageing: As you get older, your skin produces less oil and moisture, which can lead to dryness.

  3. Harsh Skincare Products: Certain soaps and cleansers with strong chemicals can strip your skin of its natural oils.

  4. Frequent Washing: Over-washing with hot water can remove the skin’s natural oils.

  5. Medical Conditions: Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and hypothyroidism can contribute to dry skin. Often these conditions can be a result of an imbalance in the gut.

  6. Medications: Certain drugs like diuretics and retinoids can cause dry skin as a side effect.

WHAT HAPPENS TO OUR SKIN WHEN IT GETS DRY?

Dry skin can lead to:

  1. Discomfort: Dry skin often feels tight and itchy, which can be unpleasant.

  2. Flaking and Peeling: Your skin might start to flake or peel, which can look unsightly.

  3. Cracking and Bleeding: In severe cases, dry skin can crack and even bleed.

  4. Increased Sensitivity: Dry skin can make your skin more sensitive to irritants like wind, heat, or certain fabrics.

  5. Accelerated Ageing: Chronic dry skin can cause fine lines and wrinkles to appear earlier.

HOW TO FIX DRY SKIN

Here are some ways to treat and prevent dry skin:

  1. Moisturise Often: Applying moisturiser after bathing and throughout the day helps lock in moisture. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerine, and shea butter.

  2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps keep your skin hydrated from within.

  3. Choose Gentle Cleansers: Go for mild, fragrance-free soaps and cleansers to avoid stripping your skin of natural oils.

  4. Limit Hot Showers: Opt for shorter, lukewarm showers to keep your skin from drying out.

  5. Protect Your Skin: In harsh weather, cover your skin with clothes, gloves, and scarves to protect it from the elements.
