Make The Call: The Self-Care Benefits of Calling an Old Friend

self-care challenge

Hello, beautiful souls! Welcome back to our weekly self-care challenge series. This week, we’re diving into the heartwarming and uplifting world of reconnecting with old friends. There’s nothing quite like the joy of catching up with someone you haven't spoken to in ages, and we're here to show you why making that call can be a game-changer for your well-being. This is definitely something I find challenging to do. Life gets busy and we get caught up in our own things that it can be so easy to neglect friendships, particularly long-distance ones. Let’s keep each other accountable! If you want an accountability partner in this, send me a message or email and let’s help each other out!

What's in the blog:

THE POWER OF CONNECTION

Did you know that staying connected with friends can significantly boost your mental health? Research consistently shows that maintaining positive relationships reduces stress, lowers the risk of depression, and even extends life expectancy. When we engage with friends, our brains release feel-good chemicals like oxytocin and serotonin, which help us feel happier and more relaxed.

WHY RECONNECTING MATTERS

Life gets busy, and sometimes we lose touch with people who once meant a lot to us. Reconnecting with an old friend can rekindle cherished memories and reignite bonds that time might have dimmed. These interactions remind us of our past, help us reflect on our growth, and provide a sense of continuity in our lives.

THE MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF FRIENDSHIPS

Positive friendships are like a balm for the soul. They provide emotional support, reduce feelings of loneliness, and create a sense of belonging. Studies have found that people with strong social networks are less likely to suffer from chronic illnesses and tend to cope better with stress. The laughter, shared experiences, and mutual support that come from friendships are crucial for our mental well-being.

TIPS FOR FOSTERING POSITIVE FRIENDSHIP

Building and maintaining friendships requires effort and intention. Here are some tips to help you nurture these valuable relationships:

  1. Be Genuine: Authenticity is the cornerstone of any strong relationship. Be yourself and let your friends see the real you.

  2. Listen Actively: Show interest in what your friends have to say. Active listening fosters deeper connections and shows that you care.

  3. Reach Out Regularly: Don’t wait for your friends to contact you. A simple message or call to check in can go a long way.

  4. Show Appreciation: Express gratitude for your friends. Let them know how much they mean to you and how they’ve positively impacted your life.

  5. Be Supportive: Celebrate their successes and be there during tough times. A supportive friend is a priceless treasure.

THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE: MAKE THAT CALL

Now, it’s time to put this knowledge into action. Your self-care challenge for the week is to call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. It might feel a bit daunting, but trust us, it’s worth it. Here are a few steps to get you started:

  • Choose a Friend: Think of someone you’ve been meaning to catch up with.

  • Reach Out: Send a text or an email to set up a time for a call.

  • Prepare to Listen: Be ready to listen as much as you talk. Show genuine interest in their life.

  • Enjoy the Moment: Savour the conversation and the reconnection.
